Muse Spark is a large language model — text-only output, multimodal input. It accepts voice, text, and image as inputs and responds in text. It does not generate images or video directly. That capability exists separately in Meta AI through third-party partnerships, which matters for understanding Meta's creative AI strategy.

The model comes with two modes available at launch. Instant mode handles quick queries — the kind of thing you used to do in a search box. Fast response, conversational, minimal reasoning overhead. Thinking mode engages for complex problems — multi-step reasoning, structured analysis, problems that benefit from the model working through intermediate steps before producing a final answer. A third mode, Contemplating, is promised for a later release. Meta describes it as operating like extended deep reasoning — comparable to Gemini Deep Think or GPT-5.4 Pro — with a multi-agent architecture where multiple sub-agents work on different aspects of a problem simultaneously to produce faster results than sequential reasoning.

On independent benchmarks, Artificial Analysis placed Muse Spark at a score of 52 on their Intelligence Index — behind Gemini 3.1 Pro (54), GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus 4.6, but ahead of every previous Meta model. Llama 4 Maverick scored 18. Llama 4 Scout scored 13. The jump from 18 to 52 in a single model generation is not an incremental improvement — it is a structural shift in what Meta is capable of building.

Meta itself acknowledges the gaps explicitly. In the technical blog post, the company states directly: "We continue to invest in areas with current performance gaps, specifically long-horizon agentic systems and coding workflows." The Visual AI Story Hidden in the Announcement

The Open-Source Question

Muse Spark launches as a proprietary hosted model — no weights, no download, no local deployment. This marks a departure from Meta's previous approach. Llama 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 were released under permissive licenses and became foundational to the open-weight AI ecosystem. Llama 4 Scout and Maverick continued that tradition. Muse Spark breaks it, at least initially.

Meta has not fully closed the door. Per Axios, the company plans to release a version of Muse Spark under an open-source license. The technical blog post includes a note about efficiency that suggests why the calculus for open-sourcing is different this time: the team describes reaching "the same capabilities with over an order of magnitude less compute than our previous model, Llama 4 Maverick."
